There are many variants of the standard game. One variation is called draw poker. After the first betting interval, each player can discard three cards, replacing them with new cards. Another is a variation of standard poker called community card poker.
This type of poker involves a side pot. When a player loses a side pot, he loses the rights to the original pot. Some games have additional rules for side pots. For example, a player who loses the original pot must forfeit any forced bets.
During the betting round, a dealer deals the cards to the remaining players. In a game of stud, the limit is usually twice as high in the final betting interval as in the beginning.
The pot is the total of all bets made in a single deal. The highest ranking poker hand, or a pair of aces, can win the pot. Various types of poker have different rules for the amount of money the players must contribute. Usually, the ante is an amount of money that each player must place in the pot before he can bet.
Upon the last raise, the betting interval ends. A player who raises is said to call. Likewise, a player who declines to call is referred to as folding. Folding is when a player does not call and discards his or her hand. Depending on the rules, a player who folds can stay in without betting.
In some types of draw poker, a player can swap up to three cards with the dealer. The dealer must then offer the shuffled pack to the opponent for a cut.
In some versions of draw poker, the kicker is the highest-ranking card in the deck. If a player has five cards of the same suit, the kicker is considered the fifth card. Likewise, if a player has four cards of the same rank, the kicker is the fourth card.
Straight poker is another type of poker. A straight flush is the best natural hand. The straight flush is a hand made up of five cards of the same suit. Normally, the straight flush is a high card, but it can also be a low card.
